The resilient evolution of Bangkok’s art ecosystem

The capital of Thailand’s name, Bangkok, hints at the city’s organic nature: Some scholars have suggested that it stems from the contraction of bang (บาง), meaning village, and makok (มะกอก), referring to a plant bearing olive-like fruit. With its rhizomatic structure and bottom-to-top dynamic, Bangkok’s art ecosystem epitomizes this characteristic perfectly.

Conversation with Indonesian art collective Taring Padi

Taring Padi is an art collective based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, formed in 1998 after the fall of President Suharto’s New Order regime. They are known for rejecting the notion of art for art’s sake, and use their work to convey socio-political messages. Their name refers to the sharp tip of the rice plant, which, upon contact with the skin, can cause it to itch.

Bangkok Art Biennale: In Search of a New Order

The 2022 Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB) connects the dots of the contemporary, with more than 200 artworks by 73 artists reflecting on our precarious condition as human beings and the accumulating threats to planet earth. Presented across 12 venues in Bangkok, inaugurated by the Biennale’s two previous editions: Beyond Bliss in 2018 and Escape Routes in 2020.
